MAMAMOO’s HWASA delivered a sold-out night in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theater on March 16th. From the moment she stepped on stage in a shimmering silver-sequined bodysuit and black corset, mic stand in hand, it was clear that she was ready to give her fans, lovingly known as TWITS, a spectacular show.
Starting the night with “HWASA”, a song named after herself, she energized the crowd, reminding them exactly who they came to see. Next HWASA performed "Chili," the Latin beat and energetic choreography setting the tone and hyping up the crowd before she asked, “Are you ready, LA?” The audience roared in response, fully engaged as she transitioned into the fan-favorite song “TWIT,” and what inspired the fandom name TWITS. Smiles lit up her face as she heard fans singing along, a moment of mutual admiration between the artist and fans.
Throughout the show, HWASA’s connection with her fans was heartwarming. “I missed you all, and I’m so excited,” she shared. “Usually, my mind is focused and coherent, but when I see you guys, it goes out the window! I just want to go crazy.”
As the evening progressed, HWASA showcased her diverse discography and range. "Somebody!" brought a playful pop energy inspired by summer. HWASA shared that when she wrote this song, she had thoughts of the feelings and smells that the season brings. She said that when she wrote “Somebody!” she was so happy that she thought her heart would burst. HWASA then switched up the vibe, declaring, “I love sexy,” as she shed her sleeves for a sultry R&B number featuring mesmerizing floor choreography. Songs like "Lemon" with its Afrobeat groove and "Don’t," which saw her stepping closer to fans, brought both passion and intimacy to the performance.
During an intermission, a video montage showed HWASA enjoying Little Tokyo and a girls’ night out. Although the group failed to go to bars as planned, they were able to enjoy a delicious-looking meal at BBQ Chicken, adding a humorous and personal touch, and making fans feel even closer to her world. Then, a video of HWASA attempting “diva” makeup in her bathroom prefaced a surprise tribute to American divas. She emerged in a cowhide skirt, white tank top, and thigh-high orange boots, delivering a powerhouse medley of "Diva," "Hung Up," "Let’s Get Loud," and "Toxic." This “Mother Medley,” named by fans, was a special treat in honor of her U.S. tour, highlighting Beyoncé, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Britney Spears, artists she has long admired.
HWASA’s candidness was another highlight of the night. She joked about never having been to a club overseas, much to a fan’s disbelief. “Please believe me!” she laughed. Reflecting on the emotions of the moment, she shared, “Whether I’m smiling or crying, I just want to give you good energy.”
The show took an emotional turn with "Road," a stunning acoustic rock ballad. The singer was not afraid to be vulnerable in front of her fans, saying she may have a lot of moments where she breaks down and is hard on herself, but she is not embarrassed to admit it because these moments lead to realizations and make us who we are. She urged fans to “really feel your emotions and cry out” when needed. The next segment of the show, she called out, signified a new chapter of HWASA. The theater fell silent as her powerful vocals filled the space, culminating in a dramatic blackout before she hit the high note in “Road.” The pace then shifted with "Ego" and "Kidding," where she went from dancing to an upbeat house techno number to rapping over deep bass and trap beats, displaying her versatility.
As the concert neared its end, HWASA reflected on the fleeting nature of live performances. “Even if I return to LA, the same people won’t all be here. Everyone here is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.” With that, she launched into "LMM," a song that helped her embrace her darkness and find new beginnings and hope. A striking visual of a dark red moon behind her added to the song’s haunting beauty. She then seemingly ends the show with another fan favorite, “Maria” by starting with an acoustic and soulful rendition. The audience sang along and HWASA was joined by her dancers, while the tempo picked up to wrap up with the iconic dance and lyrics.
As the screen finished showing a video of HWASA and her dancers practicing hard for the tour, the star of the show surprised fans by walking through the audience aisles and interacting with fans while singing a cover of “Always Remember Us This Way” by Lady Gaga. She then treated fans to a medley of her group’s songs, “Decalcomanie,” “Egotistic,” “Dingga,” and “HIP,” while inserting a remix cover of “Water” by Tyla.
For the encore, fans chanted her name, filling a virtual “meter” on the screen with their energy. She returned in a custom top made from tour merch and red lipstick, which she shares is a look she has wanted to wear in the U.S. HWASA then performed "NA," an electrifying house track.
The night wrapped up with "I Love My Body," a song gifted to her by friend and songwriter An Shinae, who was in attendance that night. As the curtains closed, HWASA surprised fans one last time with a heartfelt cover of Billie Eilish’s "Lunch," and stood in front of the curtains, leading into a dance party with her team.
As she bid farewell, she promised to return, and wished fans go home feeling fulfilled because of all the energy and love she put into the show. This first solo U.S. tour was more than a concert as it was an experience and a celebration of HWASA’s music, emotion, and individuality. It was truly heartwarming to see the unbreakable bond between HWASA and TWITs and we cannot wait until the next time she returns.
